H.P. Garg after postgraduation in Physics from Agra University in 1964 started his professional career in the year 1964 as a Solar Scientist at Central Building Research Institute, Roorkee. Later he joined as Physicist and then Head, Division of Wind Power and Solar Energy Utilization, Central Arid Zone Research Institute, Jodhpur. In 1979 he moved as a Professor of Solar Energy to the Centre for Energy Studies, IIT Delhi. He has been actively engaged in research and training in the field of Solar Energy Utilization and Renewable Energy for 36 years. He has guided 26 doctoral students and published more than 480 research papers and a large number of Technical Reports in this field. He has also published 13 books. Member/Life Member of a large number of professional societies and committees, Professor Garg has bagged many awards. Among the several international and national awards received by him are the Pioneer in the field of Renewable Energy' from WREN and UNESCO in 1996, 'Gold Medal and Renewable Energy Man of the Year (1995)' from Amir of Bahrain, 'K.S. Rao Memorial Award for outstanding life-time achievement in Renewable Energy' from Solar Energy Society of India in 1996, 'Hariom Prerit S.S. Bhatnagar Award in 1997 for Outstanding Research in Solar Energy', 'Surya Award' for Outstanding Work in Renewable Energy during 1996-97 from National Institute of Social Work, and honour 'Man of the year 1999' by American Biographical Institute, USA. He is the recipient of prestigious UNESCO Chair (1992-1997) and now holding IREDA Chair Professor in Renewable Energy.
